I would not recommend anyone to get a quad core for gaming. I have a socket 939 Operteron 180, a 2.4GHz dual core with 2mb of L2 cache. I got it for $170, which is not bad for a dual core Opteron. You may say "That thing sucks you couldn't do any good gaming on it". Well apparently, with my 7900GT, I played the Crysis demo with medium-high settings (physics were maxed as far as I remember) and with a 25-45 framerate, my cpu usage stayed below 90%. Now, if my video card were not the downfall, it is possible my cpu would reach 100% but if I had a better video card, I probably would be using a better cpu as well. My point is, even a 2.4ghz dual core is good enough to play crysis, so those "know-it-alls" who get their precious 2.8ghz quad core intels have not only wasted a ton of money but have more performance than they'll really need.
Good for Hitachi, maybe some day they'll do better than Seagate or WD. I've never used a hitachi drive before but if they accomplish this I hope they get at least in 3rd place of best disk maker. This will be such a convenience for file hosts.
this is stupid, a lot of what that guy said is not true. for example, win98 is NOT eyecandy, and w/e it does have that would be considered that can be turned off. win95 is not good for everyday tasks. is it suitable to do so? sometimes, but a newer os would be much better, even if its 98. and how is the whole "3d" look annoying? not only would be insignificantly take up disk space and ram, but it helps you actually see whats the boarder of something. and, from what i remember, win98 was under 700mb. big whoop, 200+mb for a LOT more features, stability, and functionality. if you're that cheap, go with linux and use a live cd every time you start up your computer - at least that way you take up no space at all.
as for his complaint about programs such as firefox working on a newer os, maybe he just needs to get into the new ages and just buy a new computer. it would not surprise me that hes using a newer os on something that isn't even 1ghz. this guy needs to learn to think - FIREFOX IS DESIGNED FOR MODERN COMPUTERS. obviously it'll run slow if you run it on something that wasn't designed for something THAT new.
with his whole comment on security and stability, one of the greatest complaints about the first win95 that came out was it was very INSECURE, which results in instability. win98 was considered so great because it was so much more stable and well designed. win95 was the first os of its kind for MS, you HAVE to expect problems with it. if this guy were to do as much tweaking and fixing with win98 or any other os as he did with 95, he'd get the exact amount of stability and security as he would with 95 but probably with less work, making his comments void.
i can understand his whole native feeling argument, but 1 thing that just plain makes no sense is why can't he just make the emulator fullscreen? that way, its like he really IS running DOS. Again, his point is void.
i couldn't tell if he was kidding or not in the next paragraph. even in the NT based OSes, if you're running IE and type "c:\", a file browser in explorer will run and replace IE. works the same way if you type in a website in explorer. Again, this guy just doesn't think. and who really gives a crap about those "essential tools". ever heard of right clicking? And how is forward, back, and favorites awkward? first of all, they're optional. secondly, its for a different type of organization, and apparently it worked well since the old fashioned tree idea (which i'm assuming is what he finds is better) is no longer used for regular file and website browsing whereas these buttons are. to comment on the last sentence, win98 has columns as well as every other os with menus, so idk where hes getting that from. instead of alphabetical order, its made in order of installed date, which is easier to navigate. and unlike win95, you can edit the menus yourself so they are in alphabetical order. also, the scroll arrows are NOT slow on a NORMAL computer DESIGNED for the os and they're for organization, which again, is proven effective since the idea is still being used today.
i'm completely fine with people using win95, but the reasons this guy gave are just plain wrong or stupid, or invalid.i don't mean to be this critical, but this is just ignorance.
I say MS needs to stay out of everyone's business until someone complains, and from what I hear, people complain often on XBL. I know someone who has been banned from a server just for his username, he didn't actually do anything. Some people in this world make too much of a big deal about nothing. No one gives a shit if you swear in a game, especially if single player contains swearing.
Because this isn't a mandatory question I'll keep it short.
But basically what I've been seeing lately is Nvidia and ATI are almost just about equal in performance. But I'm so confused as to what is ATI doing wrong that is so ineffective? For example, Most Nvidia cards have a 600/1700MHz clock speed (core/memory) and no more than 128 streaming processors. ATI's competitive cards are more like 800/2000MHz with 240 streaming processors.
This is just an example off the top of my head but its about what things are like right now, so what I want to know is what is ATI doing that makes everything they have significantly slower? Their latest card has 640 streaming pipelines, thats nuts. Yet it just barely compete's with Nvidia's good stuff, and it sure as hell doesn't have over 320.
I would post a screenshot of my desktop but its a screensaver so you can't see the desktop in animation.
Here is a similar idea of what I'm doing, I'm just doing a different screensaver and I don't have compiz effects on cause my computer sucks:

As you all may have noticed, you have to sacrifice desktop items for the screensaver ability. Since Ubuntu allows you to make multiple auto-hiding panels with icons on them, I added 3 (one with Linux programs, one with Windows programs, another with special panel additions) so I still have my good ol desktop but just in a different form. Anything that would normally be placed on my desktop is just 1 click away from my Home folder, so I don't have to worry about anything getting lost.
If I were AMD I'd drop the whole Phenom idea. It became a complete failure IMO and its the only thing that gave Intel bragging rights. I'd like to hear about the quad core Opterons, I'm a bit excited about those, I feel they can make a difference. AMD ought to take the easy way out like Intel until they can develop a true quad core like the Phenom except actually successful. When it comes to dual cores, I'm supporting AMD but if I ever get a quad core (which is unlikely) I'm going with the either Intel or Sun. Its a shame ATI is holding back AMD's funds, it must be hard for them to catch up on multiple projects.
This seems really nice but I'd like to know more about power consumption and heat production. Cheap laptop HDDs can run up to 45C, which is pretty hot. I'm guessing they're about the same RPM. I don't think that SOC thing is going to help much. I'm guessing these HDDs are only good in external enclosures but I would never put one in a laptop until I hear its efficiency. Laptops have enough heat and power problems.
Seriously? People are actually researching something THIS pointless? Its one thing to research if girls are more competitive than guys (another article here, but I don't find it complainable) but to see who reads more? Wow, I'm not blaming iVirtua for anything because I really like this site and Sam is just doing his job but this is annoyingly pathetic. There are more important things to research on if you're to do tech or gaming stuff. I'd like to know who conducted this.
Doesn't anyone see a problem in this? First of all, I'm almost positive PPT can have videos. Flash? Maybe not, but its not difficult to convert it to mpeg. But also Adobe ruined their own product. PDF stands for Portable Document Format. Ever since Acrobat 6, the program had nearly no additional (or useful) features but seemed to have exponentially grown about 10+MB for every version. Thats like saying you have a 200kg backpack but it just happens to have wheels. Its very heavy but its just BARELY portable enough to bring from place to place. Adding this Flash and PPT feature is so unnecessary - typically a PPT is good enough for whatever presentation you want. Slideshows are interactive, sometimes flashy, and easy to focus on. Oh, and typicaly why videos are made for presentations now is because often a slideshow is comparatively obsolete. So you're mixing a document with a slideshow with a video. Whose idea was this? I'm sure glad Acrobat is free.
Me being the somewhat nerdy kid I am even find this taking it too far. I'd like to know whose really THIS serious about gaming to spend that much money to go on some camp that they wouldn't be proud to say they've been to just so they can learn how to play a game better. I would rather go to a lan party at most 75mi away playing a game I've never heard of (meaning, no skills) than this camp.
I agree how Guitar Hero is probably less fun than a real guitar and it does use less talent and when you really think about it, it is kinda gimmicky, but I too feel that nobody really cares? Some people don't really want to play a real guitar, or they can't afford it. Guitar hero is just like getting a USB steering wheel and pedal set and playing a racing game. Is it the real thing? No way. But it gives the same idea as the real thing and its just a game - its designed to be fun and challenging, not realistic. Besides, everybody knows that when you play GH on easy, you can't possibly play an entire song on 3 notes.
I would like to know a few more specs about this laptop before even considering it. I'm just glad Dell did something good for once by letting you stay with XP and making a computer for other countries, although I'm sure these countries would prefer something easier to type with. I find these very tiny laptops only good for college students or travelers, where you can't afford much space. Otherwise they're kind of useless but still cool nonetheless.
Whether this is true or not, I still find it funny how MS pretty much stole every single idea they ever made and ended up being more wealthy than the people they stole their ideas from. Not only was DOS the only original thing they made but its also the only thing they made that never had a real flaw in it (for its time). Every other idea that MS stole had some issue with it. Everything that is only supported for MS products and works flawlessly just happens to be something MS didn't make. The point I'm trying to make it, MS needs to stop stealing ideas, and if they're going to steal the idea of the wiimote, its going to fail.
