i think he's asking these for a class assignment. because i know someone who was doing a few classes at college and one of them was just about using windows XP and he had questions similar to these.
1) How many days are you allowed in which to activate Windows XP? A) 30 2) What is the monitor screen called and why? A) Display. Sometimes the name \"display\" is preferred to the word \"monitor\", as the latter is perceived to be ambiguous alongside the other senses of \"monitor\" meaning \"machine-level debugger\" or \"thread synchronization mechanism\". Computer displays are sometimes called heads, especially when talking about how many are connected to a computer. 3) What does F1 provide access to? A) Calls up the help menu where you can search for specific words or phrases based on your needs. 4) Where would you encounter the TASK PANE? A) The \"Task Pane\" is the window on the left when you open a folder, it will contain several choices (\"Tasks\") to carry out that directly relate to the files being viewed. Largely useless in Win98, they just ate up screen space, In Windows XP however, these panes have been dramatically updated, and they now expose tasks that are appropriate for the current folder. So a folder full of images, for example, will include a list of Picture Tasks; you can view a slideshow, order prints online, or print pictures. 5) What is the notification area? A) The notification area of the taskbar is where you usually see the current time displayed. This area can become crowded with notification icons that appear when certain events occur, such as when you receive e-mail or when you open Task Manager. Windows displays a notification icon when an event occurs. After a short time, Windows puts the icon in the background to simplify that area. You can access the icons that have been placed in the background by clicking a button in the notification area. In addition, you can customize the behavior of notification icons on the Taskbar tab of the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box. 6) Give a short description of each of these file types: documents, folder, shortcuts, and program files. A) DOC or doc (short for 'document') is a common file extension, traditionally used for documentation in plain-text format, particularly of programs or computer hardware, on a wide range of operating systems. During the 1980s, WordPerfect used DOC as the extension of their proprietary format. Later, in the 1990s, Microsoft appropriated the popular DOC extension for their Microsoft Word wordprocessing formats. In consequence, the original uses for the extension have largely disappeared from the PC world. In computing, a folder is the WIMP (GUI) metaphor used to represent one directory in a file system. Note: There are typically two types of shortcuts. A computer shortcut is a file that contains only the location of another file in the computer. A keyboard shortcut is a combination of keystrokes that provides easier access to a command or operation. A program file is simply that; a file that contains a program. 7) How many letters are used in extensions? A) Typically three, but more have been used, ie: .html, .java, and the compiled object code, .class. 8) Describe how you would obtain a more detailed description of an object. A) Like Greg said, you could hover your mouse pointer over the object and if applicable, some information may be displayed. You could right click on it and obtain a list of actions such as 'properties' which will give you detailed information. Sometime by right clicking on certain objects, you'll get a 'what's this?' bubble. 9) Describe how to create an empty folder and an empty text document on the desktop. A) Simply hover your mouse pointer anywhere on the active desktop, but not over an object or link. Right click to access the list of actions, choose 'New' and then choose 'Folder' or 'Text Document' respectively. 10) What is the default size of Recycle Bin? A) In Windows XP the Maximum size of the Recycle Bin is set by default to 10% of your hard drive. 11) By default, after how many days is the Desktop Cleanup Wizard done? A) The Desktop Cleaning Wizard is defaulted to run every 60 days. 12) Describe the steps you would follow in order to manually activate the Desktop Cleanup Wizard. A) There are two ways to manually activate the Desktop Cleaning Wizard. One long, and one short. Long way: Click Start, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes under Pick a category. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Display. The Display Properties dialog box is displayed at this point. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. The Desktop Items dialog box is displayed at this point. Click Clean Desktop Now. The short way: With your mouse pointer hovering on the active desktop but not over an object or link, right click and choose 'Properties'. Click the second tab; 'Desktop'. The Desktop Items dialog is now displayed. Click 'Customize Desktop' and then 'Clean Desktop Now'. 13) What would you click to be directly connected to Microsoft's website? A) I'm not exactly sure what they're asking here. You can connect by simply clicking on 'Microsoft Update'. That will open the default web browser and direct it to Microsoft. There is also a way to connect directly to Microsoft's Access Database by using the Microsoft Jet OLEDB driver, but that starts involving connection strings. 14) You want to open a document, but are unsure where you filed it. Describe how you would locate it. A) For the sake of simplicity: click on 'Start', click 'Search', input the name or at least part of the name of the file, choose where the Search agent should look and then hit the 'Search' button. Microsofts's Search also has the ability to utilize wildcards such as '*' in place of either object name or extension. 15) Hardware can be installed two ways, by Windows discovering new item, or using the Add New Hardware Wizard. Give a set of instructions for both methods. A) Typically, if a piece of hardware is PnP (Plug N' Play) compatible, Windows will detect it and either offer up one of it's own drivers for it or direct you to insert the installation disc for the hardware. To use the 'Add New Hardware' Wizard, click on 'Start', 'Control Panel', 'Add Hardware'. The 'Add New Hardware' Wizard will then direct you to either install the hardware with the manufacturer disc (recommended if it came with one) or perform a search for the new hardware. The wizard will then either detect the new hardware or not. If detected, the option is given to look for and use a driver that Windows already has.
Bah, I'm done here. I think Greg M. pretty much summed the rest up. Good luck with your test, and tell your professor/teacher to make a more refined list of questions. Some of them are a little misleading as to what they want to know.
