The type of software applications you're using has a direct correlation to how much memory you need on your system to run them effectively.
Today's recommended minimum for running most applications is 256Mb. Couple this with the fact that you might be running several programs at any one time or are running software that is extremely graphics-intensive, if this being the case, you will need more!
In general, most current operating systems run best with at least 256Mb of RAM, and preferably 512Mb or more to take full advantage the features your OS has to offer.
For Windows XP users, we recommend 512Mb. That's just for the operating system. Then, you need to add more memory for each additional program you plan to run at any given time. To calculate the memory you may need, look at the software you're running, and then add the amount of memory required for each application, coupled with the amount you need to run your operating system.
If you're not sure how much memory your software requires, these charts can help. Here are some general guidelines I have found at www.crucial.com which correspond with today's typical applications and the amount of memory recommended for each. Remember, the more you do, the more you need!
I'd say just get 1GB and be happy. You really won't find a need for more than that. Some might not need more than 512MB, but that extra 512 won't hurt anything (except for the checkbook).

Ditto - and with the cheap RAM going around these days, you can get a stick of 512 for about $30.
