Venice has less L2 cache, but overclocks better. SD has more cache, but does not overclock as well. Which is better in your opinion? The 3800+ Venice kills the SD 3700 @ all games and benchmarks.

I am a new builder so my opinion doesn't matter that much here. But, I plan to use 3200+ Venice on my system, just for the simple fact it is fairly cheap.
I have an Athlon64 3000 with a venice core in this computer. It is outstanding for the price when gaming, and it overclocks brilliantly. With the stock HSF (quite noisy), the CPU runs at 30c Idle, and around 35 - 37 on Full load. This is un-overclocked.
I have overclocked my processor from 1.8Ghz to 2Ghz, and the temperatures still dont go past 40. Again, this is with the stock HSF.
p.s. GEEZ kooldrew you seem really Adment about every buying an opteron latley XD
Well, they are architecturally the same as the Venice and San Diego, but comes with 1MB cache and overclocks better.
But they are not necessarily better @ games than the Venice. The Opterons are designed for server-like environments. Perhaps the S939 versions are different?

The Opterons are exactly the same as the Venices architecturally. So if at the same clock speed the Opteron will beat a Venice in gaming. The independent variable being the amount of cache.
The Opterons were designed for server-like environments and that is one of the factors that effects its overclockability. Since it is designed to run in a server-like environment it goes through more testing and is made of higher quality silicon.
2GHz is no where close to where you should be timm. The good Venice's go to at least 2700 or 2800MHz.
I have no need to have my CPU running at 2.8Ghz for now, but I will make some serious changes once I upgrade from the stock HSF and add some more RAM. No point in overclocking your processor so much if you're running 512MB RAM, because the processor simply won't have space to perform.
